Cambridge Wildlife Tip #1:Getting rid of roof rats - It can be challenging to get rid of roof rats simply because many people do not know they are inside until things are out of control. Roof rats are excellent climbers and will often enter a home through damaged vents or eaves near the roof. They like to live in the empty spaces above the building's main rooms because people rarely visit those locations. Not only is everything quite, there are no predators and food is readily available from the people below. You can get rid of rats in a few ways depending on how accessible they are to you. If the rats are in an area like the attic, setting up snap traps will be your best method for removal. Snap traps are humane and effective. They can be set in areas where you have noticed rat droppings or urine marks. If the rats are not easily accessible, your next option is to install a one way door on the area of the roof where they are living. Keep in mind that rats are bale to chew through most substances, and if you exclude them, they will make an attempt to get back inside. Their advanced sense of smell will often pick up the scent of garbage that escapes through the plastic liners, and their claws find it easy enough to get into these bags. Some wild animals will also be attracted to an area by a hole or empty burrow that they can use, as they prefer to use one that has already been dug rather than having to dig their own burrow.

Massachusetts is one of the smallest states, having only a little more than 10,000 square miles of land. This land was once heavily forested with both pine and hardwood trees, but early agriculture stripped the region almost completely bare of forest. Now, there are only a few groups of old woods, and most of the forested areas are secondary growth. Still, abandon farmland has reverted a little more than half of the state back to forest. The loss of trees chased many species out of Massachusetts, and some native animals, like elk, wolves, cougars, and wolverines, are considered extinct now in the state. The regrowth of trees has lured back in moose and black bear, two large animals that had also been missing since the deforestation.
The young forest vegetation is fantastic for the proliferation of wild turkey, and there are flocks of the birds in most of the state from coastal plain to the edge of the Appalachian Mountains. Turkeys are considered a species of wild game and can be hunted during certain seasons. Incredibly acute hearing makes them difficult to sneak up on, and they can pinpoint a sound from hundreds of meters away. Their eyesight, however, is not particularly good.
