What do I do if I find a nest of baby groundhogs?

Groundhogs babies are called pups, kits or cubs. They are born in late spring and litters are usually between 3 and 6 in size. There can, however, be up to 10 babies. They are only able to start fending for themselves at about 4 weeks of age. By then they will have grown fur, and their eyes will have opened. Before then they are reliant on their mother for milk and heat. They are weaned in about 44 days and will be able to look after themselves. If you find a nest of baby groundhogs that are not yet three weeks old you might need to help them to survive.

Where is the mom?

Most often if you find a nest of baby groundhogs, the mom will be out looking for food. You might want to monitor the nest to ensure she returns. If she doesn't, there is a possibility that she has been killed or trapped. This leaves the babies defenseless and they will starve on their own. They are also vulnerable to snakes.

Wandering around

If you see a baby groundhog wandering outside, the nest might be close by. Do not remove it. You might want to see if you can locate the nest and lead it back towards it if it seems very lost.
