Do racoons hibernate?

No, racoons don't hibernate. They do not spend entire winter sleeping, to conserve energy. Most of the animals hibernate during extreme conditions to protect themselves from the cold. Also, the scarcity of food forces them to stay asleep. But this is not so in the case of racoons. Racoons have some odd abilities and inabilities, due to which they don't behave like most of the animals.

How can they survive during extreme conditions without hibernating?

Racoons do not hibernate but can curl up for weeks at a time. They sleep in dens, making holes, even up to a month. Before the onset of winters, they consume enough to accumulate fat which makes their coats thicker so that they can withstand extreme cold. The fur traps body heat close to the skin and helps to keep them warm, both in their dens and outside. Racoons can still stay active during winters as their body adapt itself to work as an insulator and they don't feel scarcity of food as they can consume up to 5 pounds of food as pre-winter planning.

Why racoons are not fully hibernating or fully non-hibernating?

Racoons are often affected by several diseases. These diseases may be responsible for their inability to hibernate for a long time.
