What are some humane ways to kill a rodent?

There are different ways in which people can deal with rodents. Some choose to kill them but of this is the choice, and then it has to be done in the most humane way possible. There are many types of traps and poisons that people use in different localities so as to control the rodents that invade homes. There are some methods which are just so inhumane and should never be applied, such as poisoning or using glue traps that let animal die in a slow and agonizing death. There is no need to use inhumane methods, so it is always better to inspect humane ways to resolve rodent infestation. Poisoning or glue traps are such methods that can lead to a very long and slow painful death in the part of the rodent involved. There are ways that you can control the rodents without causing so much misery, and in following text we speak about such.

The live traps

Live traps are a very popular choice especially for anyone who doesn’t want to kill the rodents. However, for this method to be humane it has to be checked frequently and the design has to be sensible too. There should also be some food and some nesting materials to avoid death through cold, dehydration or starvation. The captured rodents can then be taken to a vet who can put them down humanely. A wildlife rehabilitator can also be contacted.

Snap traps

These are also fast and reliable especially when the design is well thought out. The trap should ensure that the head of the rodent is fully inside when the trap gets triggered and it should be easy to set. When used well, the rodent dies quickly.

Other options

When you are faced with a very bad infestation, then you can start thinking of other things. However, it is important that only a human way be applied every time you want to kill rodents. Rodent bait is something that many people prefer. However, the rodent may go somewhere else and die and no one is able to find the body. The baits have chemicals and they may cause a very slow death due to internal bleeding. This isn’t humane and the rodent can cause greater risk if eaten by others and cause a foul smell. The baits can also be eaten by pets or little children if not placed carefully.
