How to Catch a Pigeon

Pigeons are not most people’s idea of a nice cute bird. Pigeons are thought to carry diseases and are considered dirty little scavengers. Large cities have massive amounts of pigeons that rest on roof tops and window sills. Many pigeons together count for quite a bit of pigeon droppings, which are not fun to clean up and in fact, are very disgusting. However, many city officials have not figured out how to get rid of their troubling pigeon population. Many experts want these birds to just leave their buildings and rooftops but it is really not that easy.

Some people have gotten rid of their pigeon problem by laying out poison for the birds to eat. However, a homeowner must be very careful with using any kind of poison. Other small animals can eat the poison and die and if the homeowner has children or a family pet, they will not want to use this method of getting rid of or catching a pigeon. In addition, once the poison has done its job, there will be dead bird bodies all around your property and it will be a mess to clean up.

Other homeowners and business owners have used an item like pigeon spikes. These are sharp spikes that are put down on top of the roof that are used as an intimidation factor to keep the birds from landing in the first place. If a new bird comes along and tries to land, that bird will most likely feel the sharp point of the spike. If the bird survives, it will most likely not try to land on that particular roof again. Because of their sharpness, many animal lovers will not want to harm the pigeons.

It will take some time to set a trap for a pigeon in a humane way. First pigeons are notorious for wanting to eat whatever you have to give them. To be able to set up a successful trap, it is important to first put out some food for the pigeons to try. Keep doing this for several days if not a week. Once the pigeons learn to expect that food will be out on your roof, you can then set up your trap. Open the cage door, and sprinkle some of the food outside the door and leading into the cage trap. This is very important so that you can get the pigeon to walk straight into the trap without it really thinking about what it is doing. Once the trap has been set, the door will close and you can take the bird somewhere else to let it out. However, be prepared most people think about these birds the same way that you do, and they will not want to see them anywhere near their property either.

Another way to try and get rid of the birds is to call a professional and follow whatever recommendations that he or she gives you. Some professionals will naturally go for the more permanent cure, but some may operate in a less harmful, more humane way. These individuals can have new cures that you may not have thought of before. It is worth a quick call to a pest control specialist to see what you can do, without all the fuss and muss.

Of course, there are still those who say let the bird alone, that they are not doing anything wrong and that most people expect large cities to have pigeons in them. However, it is no secret that pigeons are harmful to property and can bring illnesses to humans. So, try to find a means to take care of them in as humane of a way as possible. Everyone knows that once you get rid of one, however, that others will soon follow. Remember that humane ways are good, but how you handle your pigeon pest problem is ultimately up to you and to how much crap you have taken from these birds. Some people have said that it is possible to reach down and catch one of these pigeons by the leg, once the pigeon is interested in the food that you have brought with you. Whether this works or not is anyone’s guess.
